Since I'm not here to follow the rest of the module and time was running out, dissection only up to the point where you put together a proposal was sufficient.<br />
<br />
<b>Problem identification:</b><br />
There is an immature image regarding the drink, "chavvy" as they put it themselves.<br />
<b>What do they want me to do:</b><br />
Redesign the packaging while still containing the message that the drink consists of two blended fruits. Logo still placed clearly in sight.<br />
<b>What are they trying to achieve?</b><br />
Probably aiming for a bigger market through a new, more fresh design.<br />
<b>Who will benefit?</b><br />
The company most probably.<br />
<b>What is the message?</b><br />
That the drink, even though it's a (blended) juice, it's not only suited for children. It's a sophisticated drink meant for every age group.<br />
<b>What is the audience:</b><br />
25-35 year olds, confident, prefer regular drinks over alcohol when getting together.<br />
<b>How will the message be delivered?</b><br />
Through the new designs that will be visible in shops and bars.<br />
<br />
Next series of questions:<br />
<b>Who is the audience, established by Britvic:</b><br />
25-35 year old men and women who love getting together. Confident, grown up and not shy to drink soft drinks over alcoholic drinks without being frowned upon.<br />
<b>Who should the audience be?</b><br />
Since they strive to appeal to the grown up audience, to "get rid" of the "childish image", I suggest just the grown ups in general of different age groups. So everybody over age 25, with an established network or not.<br />
<b>Who could the audience be?</b><br />
Young adults for they are mature enough to appreciate the values set by Britvic, since they want to get rid of the image, choosing an audience of younger children would be inappropriate.<br />
<b>Why are they your audience?</b><br />
They are consumers as well. Everybody who wishes to drink a juice should rightfully do so, so I don't want to narrow it down to a group with an age difference of ten years.<br />
<b>What does this audience do?</b><br />
The audience is expected to have a full time job (hence the established network)<br />
<b>Where do they go?</b><br />
Keeping in mind that they have a full time job, I'd say they would go to pubs to meet up with friends or colleagues outside office hours or in the weekends.<br />
<b>What do they buy?</b><br />
In pubs: I'd reckon alcoholic beverages on occasion? When not interested in alcoholic beverages I think they'd usually order something fizzy like cola, or perhaps juice. (Is OJ a drink regularly consumed outside of breakfast here in the UK?)<br />
In stores: If not fizzy, probably the first best A-brand juice or perhaps budget. As long as they like the taste.<br />
<b>What do they want to be?</b><br />
Confident grown ups, in possession of established social networks. Meaning: I think, even though this is the same as the set target audience, this fits it quite well. People want to be confident with a nice group of friends to hang out with.<br />
<br />
<br />
<b>5 important words:</b><br />
- Satisfying<br />
- Socialising<br />
- Confident<br />
- Adult<br />
- Mix/Blend of two fruits.<br />
<br />
<b>5 important considerations:</b><br />
- It's a blend of two fruits<br />
- J2O maintaining its consumer recognition is important<br />
- Synonymous use of their colour green<br />
- Stand out<br />
- Visit selling points for inspiration.<br />
<br />
<b>5 related products:</b><br />
- Innocent<br />
- 5Alive<br />
- Tropicana<br />
- POM<br />
- Oceanspray<br />
<br />
<b>5 related places:</b><br />
- Pub<br />
- Supermarkets<br />
- Canteen/cafetaria<br />
- Juice bars (?)<br />
- Cinema (or location of the same setting)<br />
<br />
<b>I intend to produce:</b><br />
A few designs that fit the already existing style, while bringing something new and fresh to the shelves of the supermarkets and cafes.<br />
<b>The content will focus on:</b><br />
The properties of the drink I'm intending to sell. --> a blend of two fruits<br />
<b>I will be aiming to communicate:</b><br />
The freshness and appropriateness of the product.<br />
<b>To an audience of:</b><br />
Sophisticated and confident people. Preferable grown ups to enlarge the already existing audience for the product.<br />

This film has a lot of good features; good story line and plot (based on the book of the same name), well thought out and endearing characters, stunning visuals and a great score to accompany it all.<div>

While the first film is about the discovery of the fact that dragons aren't as bad as everyone has been assuming they were Hiccup tries to convince his village that dragons aren't the evil monsters they make them out to be. When hurting Toothless tail, making him unable to fly, Hiccup learns to understand how dragons work. While trying to get Toothless out of the valley he's fallen down in, a friendship between the two grows. When he finally convinced the children of the village that dragons aren't evil, they try together to convince Stoick, Hiccups father and leader of the village, to stop with the hurting of dragons and instead try to live together. They realised all the dragons are being controlled by some sort of alpha and this one seems to have strayed off the path. In the finale of the film Hiccup and Toothless try to defeat the alpha, hurting Hiccup in the process. Upon seeing that Toothless saved his life, Stoick accepts the dragons for what they are.</div>

The second film occurs five years after the ending of the first film. The dragons are a part of the villages society and everyone has their own dragon as a partner. Upon discovering more islands in the near surroundings, Hiccup discovers a group of people who are up to no good and he has to convince his father that they should interfere. When they realise Drago is the one who hires these people to capture dragons for his army, led by a very strong alpha, Stoick is after war instead of talking, like Hiccup suggests. When Hiccup tries to talk again to the people he gets captured by a mysterious figure, a dragon rider named Valka who turns out to be his long lost mother. Because of circumstances Drago is after war on the dragon riders and again, like the first film, we have a big fighting scene of dragons and even people alike.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
What I find really interesting is how the time gap affected all the characters. They genuinely put a lot of effort into redesigning all the (youthful) characters (since they are the one changing the most over five years). All the young characters still resemble their younger selves, but their faces and body language changed very subtle) Besides from that, they all slightly changed personality wise as well. The main traits are the same, but since five years have passed, they are all (ever so slightly) grown up and it shows. Except for change in their personalities and looks the progression of technology is very well visible when comparing the two films. All of the textures have greater detail and all the hair and fur looks much more realistic. Now I wonder if this was maybe an artistic choice as well five years ago, but I doubt it since they went for exactly the same approach and it looks so much better in the 2014 version. In the 2014 rendition of the characters there is also much more diversity in the design of clothing, whereas in the first film all boots and vests look practically the same, with some minor style differences, in the second film everyone has a completely distinguishable look.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A great addition to the cast in my opinion is Valka. Valka has lived with the dragons for 20 years after been taken away by a dragon while the village was under attack. She is a free spirit and sort of "part of" the whole family of dragons she has saved over the years. She is like a mother to them, all of the dragons listen to her authority out of respect, not fear. She has a similar design to Hiccup, to establish that she is his mother, but still different enough to be a complete character on her own, and not just "mother of". She brings a bit more love and light heartedness to the film, which came in at just the right places.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Furthermore I'd like to add that I love how they exaggerated Toothless' mannerisms. While in the first film Toothless already had prominent characteristics resembling the regular pet. I always got a bit of a dog feeling in the first film, but others more that of a cat. In the second film they pushed the mannerisms to a whole new level and they made clearer distinctions to the different characteristics, now Toothless acts definitely more like a cat while other dragons (Astrid's for example) more like a dog (wanting to play fetch etc). I feel there was room in this film for more of these characteristics since they dragons feel safe. They've earned each others trust, so they can act like their true selves around each other. (Speaking of cats, they say the animators studied footage of cats playing around and chasing tails for reference for Toothless' movements)</div>

The last design I've been working on is a kiddie version of Mike Wazowski because I think he is just extremely adorable and easy to pull off (I hope) I combined a few elements from the film about mini Mike (the big teeth in front, tiny proportions, big eye and the cap) and went for a simplistic approach. To make it a bit easier I copied each of the legs and arms to the other side to create a bit of symmetry, this will be a bit easier on the eyes so the main focus is on the eye and hat. I went for the same approach like the last one, a design with no lines, because I felt that this approach would fit the cutesy style of the drawing the best.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This time again I made a design based on a creature from the Avatar universe. The fire ferret (a mix between a ferret and a red panda I guess?) is a recurring character in the Legend of Korra series since it's a pet of one of the main characters. I wanted to try and create a simple design using only panels without lines, so I thought this might be a good opportunity. Most difficult part about making a design like this is that I had to extra focus on all the outlines. You can see immediately if it's just slightly wonky. I kept the design simple and hopefully cute enough to be interesting for voting.</div>

For all my designs I wanted to create something that I like, so my next choice is my all time favourite creature: Stitch from <i>Lilo & Stitch</i>. I decided to add a bit more to this design by adding a simplistic "background". This design is inspired by and based on the scene in Lilo's bedroom when Stitch's building San Francisco from memory when he was looking at the tv in the shopwindow earlier that day. He then demolishes the "city" based on what he was watching. I always thought the scene was extremely funny (I found a lot of thins funny when I was little) so I tried to make a design out of it.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This time I tried again to work a bit with the half tone technique. Because I was working on a canvas too big, and I couldn't "rasterise" the panels, I had to copy everything to a smaller canvas and try again. This time I kept it relatively simple with the halftone by adding it only to the "buildings", I'm not quite comfortable yet to make difficult and intriguing halftone designs. Because I used 6 colours, and according to QWERTEE's rules, you're only allowed to put the design on light T-shirts, so I went for white and grey to show what the options are.</div>

Originally, the film wouldn't even exist like we know it now. When they started production on the film in 1994, they had a completely different story in mind. Originally it was going to be another Disney musical film with a story line like <i>The Prince & the Pauper.</i> The emperor would've had a peasant doppelgänger with who he would change places with. A witch wanting to retain her youth needed to get rid of the sun to prevent her from ageing. When she discovers the switch between the emperor and the peasant she decided to turn the emperor into a llama. In his new form he learns about humility and finds love in a llama-herder, together they try and figure out a plan to undo what the witch has done. The film would be guided by a series of songs, which were already finished by the time the switch happened.</div>

After receiving poor feedback, trying to make the story more original and the lack of direction, made it happen that the development suffered a lot. After years of struggle they found out that the story as it was at its current production, it wouldn't be finished in time for the deadline. When they declined the request for an extension, Director Allers quit the project. They than had two weeks to change the story and it changed into what we know is the Emperor's New Groove. </div>

It has a brilliantly funny storyline unlike Disney had ever produced before its release.What we think of when we hear Disney films we think of fairy tale musicals, full of magic, often looking for love. Sure, since it's release in 2001 another greater diversity of films has been produced, but one of Disney's trademarks is its princesses. The film is filled with a tiny cast and heaps of sarcasm and innuendos. Another comedic element that has been added to the film is the fact that Kuzco narrates nearly half of the film, besides only using a voice over, they added sequences in the film that Kuzco pauses it, to emphasise his clarification. To extend that even further for more comedic purposes they made him draw on the frames as well. Aside from that, a lot of the jokes that are made aren't usually in a film, they're a bit like "fourth wall jokes", discussing things that wouldn't be possible in other features.</div>

A lot of the designs are quite simple but humorous. The designs of the characters are based off historical clothing from Peru and the Incas. While its landscape design is also based on the environments in Peru, it's more loosely based than geographically correct. A thing I really love about the character designs in this film is that everything is overly exaggerated. Kronk, the ignorant sweetheart who can actually do no one harm, is a stereotypical design of a buff bodybuilder. Yzma is ultra skinny, emphasising her old age with her saggy skin and it's colour. Kuzco is your average pretty boy in design, with the most "normal" proportions and Pacha the humble family man. All their personalities really shine through in their designs and it adds a lot of charm.<br />

I remember watching a part of this film when I still had Greek in secondary school and my teacher wanted to turn it off since it's so far from the actual myths we had been studying. But it figures, it's been loosely based off the myths of HERACLES, and not Hercules.<br />

Anyway, even though it doesn't seem to resemble the myths at all, I still love the movie, especially its characters. One of the first characters we're introduced with are the muses. These are the five muses of Greek mythology, the muses of epic poetry, drama, music, comedy and dance. Each of the muses has their properties incorporated in their design and it peaks through in the songs they're performing and they way they behave and act overall. A thing I really adore in the artistic style of the film is how they tried to make it look different than Disney films made before, they wanted it to look Greek. The art style is inspired by statues, paintings and vases from Ancient Greece. Aside from that they were also inspired by the artwork of Gerald Scarfe, who created album artwork for Pink Floyd's <i>the Wall</i>. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In general, I really love how the characters are designed all quite differently with tiny detailes that makes it a whole. While Hercules and Zeus are quite "angular" in design and build, Megara and Hades for example are quite the opposite, consisting of smooth lines and here and there the necessary spiked details. Because such big characters are so different in design with tiny details (like the swirls on joints such as kenes, or at the end of lines, in the hair etc) that try and make them fit together, to me it's already they "opposites attract" that is key in the design. Because they are so different in design to me, they complement each other when together in shot.</div>

Getting back at puns, I really love all the mythical references the films tries to sneak into the script, all jokes I can greatly appreciate. As well, if you have knowledge of Ancient Greek Mythology, it's always fun to try and point out which character resembles who out of all the gods. Even though I'm not entirely fond of all the bright colours they used to perhaps tell all the different gods apart, it sure does its job. I wonder however how it could've been when they would've stuck to a smaller palette of colours and perhaps only use different "holy glows" to clarify who is godly and who is not.</div>

Tarzan is the last film from the so called "Disney Renaissance", a period of 11 years in which Disney had a creative bursts with films that were received well by the public and critics. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Tarzan is a gorgeous film put together with different techniques, which I didn't know about before. IT bursts with lots of different, very strong characters who all complement each other in a magnificent way. The animation is done gorgeous, while being distributed over two locations: LA and Paris. Tarzan was animated in Paris where Glen Keane partnered up with french animators with a background of excellent life drawing skills. Something that turned out to be quite required when working on a character with such a complex physique. He needs to look strong, without looking too buff. He's human but walks and acts like animals he's surrounded with, adapting to each animal respectively. And of course, he is 95% naked, which causes to give him an anatomically correct physique with correctly displayed muscles.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
In Tarzan a lot of different emotions of love, friendship and curiosity come into play, which I think is brilliantly done. The characters each have very strong characteristics in their design, mainly their eyes. The eyes of all characters tell so much to me in this film and I'm not entirely sure why. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
A really important part of the film is the symbolism in the hands touching each other, especially those of Tarzan and Jane's. It became such an important symbol of the relationships between the characters in the film. It metaphors Tarzan's search for his own identity. All his life he's been made fun of for being different, desperately trying to fit in and get approval of Kerchak. Then he finds creatures who look different than all the ones he's been seeing in his life. When touching Jane's hand he first realises they're the same, which is a catalyst for the roller coaster of emotions Tarzan is going through afterwards. Upon realising who he is, he then starts looking for more answers, who is he really? Even though the gorillas are his family, he's technically not the same. A major thing they changed from the comics is the end. Initially Tarzan was to leave the jungle and go to England, but to strengthen the effect and the symbolism they put into family, they altered the story so he could stay. This way Jane could be part of his world emphasising the relationships.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A thing I never realised in all my years watching this film is that all of the backgrounds were technically 3D <span style="font-size: xx-small; text-decoration: line-through;">(to be honest, it's also been a while since I last watched it so I might've been able to notice it now?)</span> They made use of new techniques within the 3D animation of Deep Canvas. This way they could make the paintings come to life, as if they would be walking and swinging around in a 2D environment. How it technically works is that they create a 3D environment, and they paint on the mesh, as if you would when painting on a canvas, and this way you can paint everywhere you'd ever dreamt of painting. Because the backgrounds and the characters always blended so smoothly I never noticed, or even thought of the idea that it could've been another medium.</div>

To bring another emphasis on the whole "family" as a general theme in the film: When the animators went on safari in Kenya to observe the gorillas, they encountered a view they never expected to see. Instead of the ferocious animals they had expected to stumble upon, they saw a beautiful family of gorillas living together, caring and watching out for each other, just like you would see with humans. And this little piece of magic that is the animal kingdom always amazes me.<br />

There are a few things when they were creating the Incredibles that I think are really clever:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1. Working from Collages</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
2. Basic shapes to create the characters</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
3. Interesting silhouettes in design. </div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When I went to the Pixar Expo in Amsterdam a year ago, I found out that the designers of the Incredibles worked a lot in collage techniques when creating lots and lots of characters for the film, especially when creating the superheroes' designs. They mostly worked with coloured panels or ripped pieces from magazines. The collages were inspired by the looks of posters from the 50's. When making these different kind of collages, you stumble upon designs or colour combinations you normally would not have thought of. What I really like about these designs and "posters" is that the creators added them in the film, one way or another, either it being the title or credit sequence, or through posters/comic book covers that are shown in the film.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXKkG9Rp91PZMfypgUqkcTZeWa3wGo66PqEbHf0NGXJs_ozunIFdrANSOhgq6YLnOGWPxazjiWi0LNSQX-47LZmeaDkP1fxGvZMIAnafCMtZMZZ2hMvjw0fL81cplcgc1O5r0cknr1Y78/s1600/incredibles-sm.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXKkG9Rp91PZMfypgUqkcTZeWa3wGo66PqEbHf0NGXJs_ozunIFdrANSOhgq6YLnOGWPxazjiWi0LNSQX-47LZmeaDkP1fxGvZMIAnafCMtZMZZ2hMvjw0fL81cplcgc1O5r0cknr1Y78/s1600/incredibles-sm.jpg" height="195" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When creating the family (and probably other heroes) they tried to incorporate their powers into their designs. Meaning they wanted to enhance the kind of power they have by the figure of the body. A few examples; Dash having the power of speed had to be tiny. Small legs to move fast. The combination of his slick haircut adds the sense of speed. Especially when you look at the shapes that combine his head: round shape for his general face and the triangle for his hair. (look at image for reference). Violet on the other hand has a timid personality, being very shy and wanting to be able to disappear. Whoa, she can for real! The timid posture she has in the beginning of the film and her skinny physique enhance her power of invisibility, with in contrast the power of creating a force field.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Robert Parr, Mr Incredible, has super strength, so his physique and design is quite obvious. Big guy, big shoulders and lots of muscle mass.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5hjyTxBxxTJBKSBNeQsz0DJZLWXnEiWKFGnn4GAlCFW9tpp_1veyuu6ja_CAIEc8OypAoZ-i6Ni6hUjqx5W-4LNuWpqBL1xXHWUQyWvXAA5UCoZR5yG_zGDaNcGrMf15SsumbL-Ewgx8/s1600/charactershapes.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5hjyTxBxxTJBKSBNeQsz0DJZLWXnEiWKFGnn4GAlCFW9tpp_1veyuu6ja_CAIEc8OypAoZ-i6Ni6hUjqx5W-4LNuWpqBL1xXHWUQyWvXAA5UCoZR5yG_zGDaNcGrMf15SsumbL-Ewgx8/s1600/charactershapes.png" height="400" width="247" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Pixar has a great sense for poses and silhouettes. When combining the two you can go far with your designs. One character that I used the hate when I was little but have come to love is Mirage. She is a clever piece of design. She has the ultra skinny body and the sly eyes, fitting here cunning personality she puts up in the beginning of the film, combined with her round face shape, which (when we look back at the image above) should generally suggest a person is friendly, trustworthy even perhaps. When the movie develops we get to see her true colours and realise she isn't that bad after all, probably caught up in an abusive relationship. The combination of here head and body is misleading, but works perfectly. Another character I adore is Edna. She is the epitome of what everybody needs to be. She is funny and quirky, but sure is stubborn as well. She has a tiny and square physique, making it more difficult to convey emotions, but here body language is everything. For such a small posture, she has great silhouettes when posed in the right way.</div>

I always wanted to network more, but I actually never did. I was jealous of some of my friends who are easy talkers, who just could go up to some animators whose work they admired and talk about it, leaving probably some impressions.<br />
<br />
While I was at BAF I dared to open up a bit more and dared to ask questions in a full lecture room or just walk up to some people, even if it was to ask for just a photo. I think being in another country, forcing myself in other surroundings, new classes, new people, might've been the start of it. Usually I always waste away in a corner, until I think it's safe enough to open up myself to other people, but I kind of forced myself out of that lifestyle since I was here for only a short period of time.<br />
<br />
While I was here I started working on a showreel I could use to contact some studios with, since I'm required to work as an intern in April. Just waltzing into a studio to show my portfolio isn't something I usually do, but when I went to ShoSho for my application, I felt more confident than I did before. So this is a thing I want to continue doing the nest months, even years. I want to go to more festivals (if my wallet allows me to), talk to more people and try to dig more into the world of animators what I wish to be a part of.<br />
<br />
Some festivals I have in mind to go to are Holland Animation film Festival in Utrecht (18-22 march), Klik Amsterdam (27 october - 1 november), Playgrounds (October 2015). I wish to go to das Internationales Trickfilm Festival in Stuttgart again (5-10 may 2015), but since I'm having my internship then, I'm not sure what the possibilities are since you need to take days off, etc. However, when working at Shosho, I'm also sort of busy networking, right?<br />
<br />
I want to thank everyone at LCA Animation department for guiding me through these past months and I wish to visit again soon!Daniquehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13717146853700487664noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4474944506551070088.post-77604477682447903022015-01-19T18:06:00.002+00:002015-01-19T18:06:36.601+00:00Business cards Mock ups<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
To finalise my semester of PPP, I created some mockups for business cards. They are probably not finished yet, but it's a start I could go further on when I'm producing my graduation film (where business cards are required). Since my website is plain with a yellow border, I stuck to it (also on other platforms like YouTube and Google+, still busy on touching up my other networks) and used a basic font for the contacts.</div>

I also thought it was probably full of cleverly placed references to alien films or happenings, which I don't know much about. I never really had that much for alien films before. Even though the ratings of this film are pretty low, (21% Rotten Tomatoes, 39% Metacritic) I still think the film is pretty clever. Sure, the plot was a bit predictable, but you don't often see such films through the eyes of the creatures on the other side.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhERDUg1pEABBziQ52SYmCviorePS4RVFbh8Ixcw4mueTmYLvW9OxNjDLS5BFnAH9JvileWlAK25-e_7WxUhtgys2AOUQi1Juh43NkYxsiYtDHeoKV_uWsenOveVwNs4BL0oRWL01yYHBc/s1600/planet_51_29.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhERDUg1pEABBziQ52SYmCviorePS4RVFbh8Ixcw4mueTmYLvW9OxNjDLS5BFnAH9JvileWlAK25-e_7WxUhtgys2AOUQi1Juh43NkYxsiYtDHeoKV_uWsenOveVwNs4BL0oRWL01yYHBc/s1600/planet_51_29.jpg" height="160" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The story basically consists of a recognisable plot line from the past few decennia: boy likes girl, she is sort of interested, but the mixed signals the clumsy boy releases are a bit off putting. Add some comic relief characters and lots of pop culture references and you've got yourself a film. Probably an easily forgettable film, but still a film. While "planet 51" occurs in the style of the 50's, and the human (for them alien) visitor is actually from the 21st century, a clash is created between the two worlds, which in turn ignites a comic reaction.<br />
<br />
What I quite enjoy in "easy watch films" are references, and trying to find them all. First: the Rover Robor, reference the the Mars Rover and similar in design. Sending only pictures of rocks while a whole planet is at his feet (when he manages to escape that is. While imprisoned we see other appliances/satellites "captive" as well like Sputnik.) Other pop culture references are the bicycle from E.T., the housedog looking similar like the aliens in Aliens vs Predator and for example references made by the human character Chuck about Terminator and Star Wars. More recognisable things are the way the movies the aliens watch are similar to the alien films we produced years ago, comic book culture and even the portrayal of hippie culture (with the typical VW van. But without wheels, since all the vehicles hover. And it rains stone? Logical.)<br />

So while the storyline was quite recognisable, recycled and predictable, it still makes it into an enjoyable film, but not necessarily a top notch film like we're used to from Pixar or Dreamworks. It's just that I have a soft spot for references and easter eggs which made this movie stand out a bit to me I guess.Daniquehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13717146853700487664noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4474944506551070088.post-72915695202493336902015-01-19T02:14:00.001+00:002015-01-19T02:14:19.114+00:00Monsters like you've never seen beforeI spoke before about how regularly in films and tv series 3D animation is used for environmental expansions to scenes, a lot of the times creatures, animals or monsters will be created as well. Most of the times because the animals in question are too dangerous to really work with, or they just don't exist.<br />
<br />
An Oscar winning performance on this the past few years was won by the team that was working on Life of Pi. <span style="font-size: xx-small; text-decoration: line-through;">(Dutch pride yay!)</span><span style="font-size: xx-small;"> </span>One of the many animals they had to create was this tiger. Usually making creatures isn't that big of a problem, to make them lifelike and have them interact with the actors is the tough part. Because you're working with something that isn't technically there is difficult for actors and the director, the harder part is for the VFX team. They need to work with what they get. There are a lot of things happening. For example, the scene where the tiger escapes from beneath the tarp, the boat is swaying back and forth, in which the water reacts as well. These are two different kind of software in one scene: for the tiger and the water simulation.<br />
Also because you're working with something that isn't there, a lot of things need to be thought out carefully in advance; where will the creature (tiger) be placed in the scene, how is the actor going to react to it, how do we make it look convincing? When interacting "physically" with something that is CGI, actors usually get something like a mock-up or a dummy to hold on to, where the animators then can place their work onto or over.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Another recent film with complex creatures is Hercules (2014). I went to the Double Negative talk at the Bradford Animation Festival, and this gave lots of insight into what's actually happening at the visual effects department. These creatures were made from scratch derived from some digital sculpts they received to work with. The creatures had to look believable while interacting with the actors. A difficult problem that had to be tackled in these sequences: the fur. Fur and hair is a pain in the ass to make look realistic. They created a specific tool for this: Furball, to preview render the fur way faster than was previously possible to create stunning performances of the creatures.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Considering this is all possible opens a lot of doors. You don't necessarily have to work with the real life creatures (if they're just animals, and not like Ceberus, the three headed dog). In a behind the scenes video on this <a href="http://my3dparadise.blogspot.co.uk/2014/08/hercules-vfx-breakdown.htmlhttp://my3dparadise.blogspot.co.u" target="_blank">site</a> was said that a sequence with the lion was already finished when they were still actually shooting the film. Having such reference is a lot of help for a director when working and shooting the scene. When working on something and seeing something is already near finished, or finished enough to work way in a sense, sure keeps the team motivated.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
What I found really interesting when listening to the talk of Double Negative, is how much thought is put into creating such creatures. They place layers of layers, each with different properties, to make the 3D model react as lifelike as possible. A mesh-layer acting like muscle, another layer sliding on top of it like it's skin, add the fur which reacts in a totally different way, but it's all necessary to make the close up shots look believable. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Another worthy mention is the dragon Smaug in the Hobbit trilogy. Instead of only creating the dragon and having it animated after the recorded audio of Benedict Cumberbatch, they incorporated motion tracking with it as well. Which sounds quite funny. We know that motion tracking is popular with human like creatures (Davy Jones in Pirates of the Caribbean, Gollum in the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit respectively) but translating the movements of a human face to that of a dragon sounds a bit strange. They used tons of trackers on Ben's face to record how his muscles are moving when he's acting, using dramatic movements on his eyebrows mouth and nose. Those drastic movements are I guess useful to translate to give a better idea of how the dragon would be moving I guess? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
But it doesn't stop there for Benedict didn't only record his facial expressions to be translated into the face of the dragon, he has also been acting in a motion tracking suit for the bodily movements of the dragon. (literally flailing and crawling over the floor must've been a hilarious sight). </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I think it's amazing how all those recorded movements then can be translated into something that isn't even close to human anatomy. Aside from that, Smaug is a decent piece of 3D imagery as well. He has a detailed texture of scales all over his body, and a very expressive face, which was animated beautifully. <strike>Almost as beautiful as Lee Pace as Thranduil.</strike></div>

Since the start of 3D generated images, they've been using it to create scenes that are very hard or impossible to film without harming people (sinking of ships, close up explosions, futuristic sequences). Because of 3D animation they can expand the environments that already exist, create entirely new ones, or alter the environment when shot on location.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkH1faRFNTEsJ5t5MfbVMPDmLSzFqonuSvGj2vzR_OIrQwIT_X_PqTr-pNOr0OyZyEYcre5RR5Gi_ndoOdUyGZ1GMWNYV5v6YG_kqhn5ayKjuXFDGVjq0lKhhi2pkS1jXbqMWOjyTbiJ8/s1600/tumblr_ne1ziaEXn31qgykbzo1_500.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkH1faRFNTEsJ5t5MfbVMPDmLSzFqonuSvGj2vzR_OIrQwIT_X_PqTr-pNOr0OyZyEYcre5RR5Gi_ndoOdUyGZ1GMWNYV5v6YG_kqhn5ayKjuXFDGVjq0lKhhi2pkS1jXbqMWOjyTbiJ8/s1600/tumblr_ne1ziaEXn31qgykbzo1_500.gif" height="134" width="320" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEieuJcErXkFDJzlBrp8eq2FfWpWdaWVMnrthwFuas0I2seE_CuaZ9dgBlrGeF70Y_xA-TjI_XUtwwzhW4H_Qdj_8bqwELCsFzPiAbSXKUoB6ozz-SF-ARUVvW58IN0XghQ3R2Xu22zDPas/s1600/tumblr_ne1ziaEXn31qgykbzo2_500.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEieuJcErXkFDJzlBrp8eq2FfWpWdaWVMnrthwFuas0I2seE_CuaZ9dgBlrGeF70Y_xA-TjI_XUtwwzhW4H_Qdj_8bqwELCsFzPiAbSXKUoB6ozz-SF-ARUVvW58IN0XghQ3R2Xu22zDPas/s1600/tumblr_ne1ziaEXn31qgykbzo2_500.gif" height="179" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In a lot of science fiction or fantasy films/tv series, they need to create an environment that is either very surreal or very idyllic. To make the audience feel like they're in the film they're watching, you have to create an environment that really sweeps you off your feet. A lot of the times for series like Game of Thrones, scenes are shot outdoors in open fields or other places. To then make it fit into the idyllic, medieval surroundings the book describes, a lot of environmental properties are added to the scene, castles, forts, walls, or even whole armies and camps. Environmental expansion is useful in a lot of ways, you don't need to hire thousands of extras to represent an army, usually you only need a small number of people, and these will then be "copied" in the computer and thus a whole army will be generated. Because we never see their faces, they only need to move, which is usually done through crowd simulations. </div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
But I was talking about environments and not crowd simulations. Nowadays a lot of movies are shot in studios, where either a complete base of a set is built where the actors in act and afterwards the extra surroundings get created that have no interaction with the actors. Or they film in front of a green/blue screen with a prop or part of a set where the entirety of the scene will be computer generated. Scenes shot in a green/blue screen studio are shot there for probably two reasons: one; it's too dangerous to do it for real somewhere outside (for example the dangling from a cable off an ice wall, see second GIF at the top, or the hot air balloon basket in the river down below) or two; the environment they need to create is in no way achievable with props. </div>

<br />
Very impossible scenes to shoot from the past century are for example the Pirates of the Caribbean quartet. They used a MASSIVE tank where a ship could fit in to film the scenes that occur on the open sea. Of course they also used scaled down replicas to shoot the film, otherwise it would've probably cost a lot more money than it already did. Environmental expansion/alteration is also used when a film is set in the nearer past, when they need to change the skyline of a city for some buildings didn't exist yet in, for example, the 70's. A good example is probably Rock of Ages. This Rock Opera was filmed a few years ago, but was set in Los Angeles. They've shot scenes on different locations, but still had to alter a lot since it's set in 1987<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A lot of people, watchers of films, know of course that a lot of visual effects is involved in modern film industry because it's very often very obvious. But a lot of the time it goes unnoticed because it seems like such a "simple scene to shoot, why would visual effects be involved". People don't seem to realise that a lot of films aren't shot on location anymore, especially because they have a budget that allows them to use computer generated effects.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Speaking of budget, it reminds me of a funny fact. In 2013, they released Oldboy, a recreation of the ten year older film produced in South Korea. With a budget of 3 million dollars, lack of special effects and a filming culture in where they shoot a lot on location, they didn't need a bigger budget than that. It hit box office with 15 million dollars. The 2013 american remake however: packed with action and lots and lots of visual effects called for a budget of 40 million dollars, while making "only" 4.7 million dollars off it in box office. Is budget and special effects everything in a film: apparently, it seems not, but we sure think it's all visually appealing. </div>

For the last session of Responsive regarding the Propercorn brief, I took some of the feedback in account and tried to create updated versions of the storyboards with colour, decided to turn them into moving storyboards, and create one animatic to (hopefully) make more sense.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I tried to add a bit more life to my presentation boards by adding some simple colour schemes to the background. Intentionally, I didn't add any text to the boards, since I had in mind to never use text on presentation boards for some reason. I did forget though, that these boards should be understandable for anyone, so also for people who don't know what the hell you are doing, so I should've added an extra board explaining the brief and explaining more what I did.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- "Done Properly" ethos has been wel presented</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Suggestions:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- Could have more of an explanation on boards: who is the audience, what the brief is, etc. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- Needs more clarity.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- It does solve the problem</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- Has mock-up so is clear what the endproduct will look like.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- Amazing concept of animating the flavours</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- Focuses on calorie content and natural ingredients</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Suggestions:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- Doesn't judge or stereotype, but fits the entire breadth of target audience.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Suggestions:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- Where other than websites will the advert go?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- Are there any stills of the work for posters?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Comments on visual quality in relation to response</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Strengths:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- Keeps with the same design as pack, clearly thought about colour scheme.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- Strong consistent colour scheme with packaging.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Suggestions:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
-Keep hand drawn 'rough' charming aesthetic, don't refine digitally too much. (note: wasn't my intention, but mostly lack of time to draw EVERY LINE for four storyboards, whelp.)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- Just to clarify, after the calorie content, add the logo (I knew I forgot something.)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- Specify the medium of the drawings, needs a still of final look as well as the roughs</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- background of board distracts from content, better to leave it plain.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Comment on the presentation of the work with regards to the quantity, quality and appropriateness of text based and visual information</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Strengths:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- Neatly composed, clear layout</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- keeps with relevant, appropriate colour scheme</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Suggestions:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- Use a clear background, do not lose focus of content</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- More boards with analysed imagery</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- Written explanation on boards</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- Put brief on board.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Self evaluation based on peer feedback.</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I think the things that have been said were quite useful. When I made the boards, I had a presentation in mind. I was always taught to use as less words as possible when creating something (PPT, prezi) you are going to present with. What slipped my mind however, is that his isn't necessarily a presentation, but a proposal, where you have to keep in mind that no one knows what the brief asks for and what you're doing. I'm happy that my ideas were perceived positively, it makes me think, in spite of the haziness the sessions were to me, that I am on the right track. Even though the dissecting of the brief turned out to be quite a tedious process, going over and over it again in the sessions, it sure is very useful. It learned me to be more critical when being offered a brief or assignment.</div>

<br />
Like I discussed in my last post on development, I only changed the timing of the camera angles since they felt a bit awkward. After the final render, I collected the files and I saw I made a render mistake. AGAIN.<br />
<br />
In one of the scenes the hair render was still on the old zoom of camera 2, so too far in. To tackle this I adjusted the zoom in After effects, en to make sure it followed the head correctly, I placed some keys on its position.<br />
I also felt like the seemed bald-ish at some moments, so I doubled the layer of hair in every shot to make her hair appear fuller.<br />
Besides re-rendering some shots, I had to alter the audio a bit. I put up the volume as far as I could without creating a distortion, and I did the same for the sound effects, since they were too subtle. (I remember saying this before?)<br />
<br />
I'm quite glad with how it turned out. Looking back at it I see now I made lots and lots of mistakes, considering I had to ask Mat for help, A LOT, but I'm really grateful. I'm really glad I had the possibility to practice more with modelling and animating and I feel like I'm getting away from the rough edges of the linear and stiff animating I did before. I'll definitely try and keep all the tips I got the past months in mind when I'm working on the next project!Daniquehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13717146853700487664noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4474944506551070088.post-39171545815528026632015-01-18T02:07:00.001+00:002015-01-18T16:40:23.924+00:00Character diversityI feel because of the hype around female designs in Tangled, Frozen and even Big Hero 6, a lot of questions pop up regarding diversity in character design. There's been a lot of discussion and controversy regarding Disney recycling their designs (especially in their 3D releases) and thus recreating the same images for their female characters. Girls with big, doe-like eyes, tiny noses and slim lips.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmulEdjjG_gbyN1J23SAfyzygROa4wHN3_vctV2AcRHWjVDWhjQfuDi_sTSb78ktgPBnWidEhuUXltySEmJcR84mfo0mZTCPW7V3Fwn-GTjU8Zd87L0mqE1C_lN6aUdwkk5tMzdS6bD8c/s1600/376f5dd7f7cc38313221abcef521aeee.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmulEdjjG_gbyN1J23SAfyzygROa4wHN3_vctV2AcRHWjVDWhjQfuDi_sTSb78ktgPBnWidEhuUXltySEmJcR84mfo0mZTCPW7V3Fwn-GTjU8Zd87L0mqE1C_lN6aUdwkk5tMzdS6bD8c/s1600/376f5dd7f7cc38313221abcef521aeee.jpg" height="211" width="320" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAzvovGqXJGudjHFBKleNeOz6B39AzqJulPqK59Tq8UVfNutZKUEX88pfzpjlcdD67xW99qT8NxIxCCmFspqNqMaLMj0120OBFlEyeSajr0swvJ1kgkn0F1gky8KiPGug1EDD0tHRSihU/s1600/tumblr_n7ybtqm8XW1qhya14o5_500.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAzvovGqXJGudjHFBKleNeOz6B39AzqJulPqK59Tq8UVfNutZKUEX88pfzpjlcdD67xW99qT8NxIxCCmFspqNqMaLMj0120OBFlEyeSajr0swvJ1kgkn0F1gky8KiPGug1EDD0tHRSihU/s1600/tumblr_n7ybtqm8XW1qhya14o5_500.jpg" height="234" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
One of the questions that always seem to reach the surface is, Is Disney capable of creating a more diverse collection of designs for their female leads? Capable, yes. Wishing to do so, probably not. Ever since the start of their female leads in animations, the girls have had big, bright eyes and tiny facial features (not all, but a lot). This reoccurring phenomenon gives me the idea this is a trademark for Disney films, for I have seen quite a variety of designs for girls in other films. For example: Fiona and the princesses in Shrek have all quite realistic looking features and proportions, other films from Dreamworks feature a lot of diversity in features of their females as well. Same goes for Pixar, every film calls another style of human characters (when they make an appearance), thus not gathering a same look for them all.<br />
<br />
So of course, it is very possible to create a large diversity in designs for 3D animated characters, but I feel we don't see it as often than for 2D animated films. And I wonder why. What I noticed is that the big shots like Disney, Pixar and Dreamworks, play it relative safe when it comes to designing their characters for 3D films, at least safer when they did for 2D films. There are designs in some films that don't fit the "mould" but still feel very realistic. While I get the feeling that "more unknown" (and with that I mean companies not as big branded as the former three, like Sony or Blue Sky) studios play around more with their designs in some instances.<br />

Even though Disney's princesses/female leads "continue to look the same" a lot of the extra characters seem to get a lot more diversity, where in other films I feel they try to distribute the diversity over the whole cast. While in Tangled the mains were all gorgeous (Rapunzel, Flynn, Mother Gothel), the extras (the Thugs) were quite diverse, but in Brave or the Incredibles for example, all the characters have distinctive style. What I'm getting here at is, while a lot of people try and use the excuse: "it's hard to create a lot of diversity in 3D animated characters, so the reason they play it safe is because of that", I beg to differ. There already have been created lots of diverse characters in the past fifteen years, and I feel this is only growing. The reason why a lot of 3D characters will probably still look alike, just like a lot of 2D characters did, is just a creative choice of the directors of a film and not an incapability.Daniquehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13717146853700487664noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4474944506551070088.post-1756225625187619312015-01-18T01:22:00.002+00:002015-01-21T00:35:55.205+00:00Mr. Hublot<a href="https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=4474944506551070088" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a><a href="https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=4474944506551070088" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a><a href="https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=4474944506551070088" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a><a href="https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=4474944506551070088" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a><a href="https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=4474944506551070088" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a><a href="https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=4474944506551070088" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a><a href="https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=4474944506551070088" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a><a href="https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=4474944506551070088" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a><a href="https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=4474944506551070088" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a><a href="https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=4474944506551070088" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a><a href="https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=4474944506551070088" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a><a href="https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=4474944506551070088" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a><a href="https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=4474944506551070088" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a><a href="https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=4474944506551070088" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a><a href="https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=4474944506551070088" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a><a href="https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=4474944506551070088" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="270" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/3xJRdUbpOWc" width="480"></iframe>

I absolutely love this short. I already did some research on this short before last year, but I figured I could try again this time for this module.<br />
<br />
Mr. Hublot is a lovely executed 3D animated short. The character design is a lot in correspondence with the design of the surroundings.<br />

The short begins with an introduction to mr. Hublot, his surroundings remind me of the 50ies mixed with a modern, steampunk like touch. He performs a series of actions which lead me to the conclusion that he deals with a form of OCD. When he exits his house he sees that the big building opposite his house is for sale, down in the street is a lot of traffic. His attention is grasped by a small robot-like dog. He then enters his house again and get a time lapse of the night.<br />

<br />
In the morning he follows a ritual that is very time-bound: stirring his coffee for a certain amount of time, hitting the edge of the cup with his spoon for a certain duration, until he gets distracted of the happenings outside. He again focuses on the dog. Lost in thought, he "awakens" again when the bell in his clock tolls. In a hurry he continues with his rituals. In the meantime we see that the dog is having a rough time. <span style="font-size: xx-small;">(<strike>haha, rough, ruff. Okay joke time over.</strike>)</span><br />

<span style="font-size: xx-small;"><br /></span>
When he wakes up the next day because of a lot of noise, he sees that the box the dog was sleeping in is slowly disappearing in the garbage truck. Because having grown a fondness of the dog, he hurries outside to try and help the dog. Thinking the dog is gone, he is surprised when the dog is suddenly sitting next to him. He takes the dog in, takes care of him and the dog keeps growing and growing. Suddenly the dog becomes too big for the tiny home. Because his rituals are disrupted, mr. Hublot slowly starts "to lose his mind", and it seems like he wants to take apart the dog out of frustration.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
In the next shot we see him performing his daily rituals in peace. It turns out he bought the big building that was for sale in the beginning, so he could live together with the dog, without having to care about the house falling apart.</div>

<br />
The combination of the designs of both the characters and the surroundings, plays a significant role in the way the story is told. While Mr. Hublot's design is quite simple, he has a lot of details in his accessories. The way he interacts with his surroundings gives away a lot of his personality and his surroundings have an effect on him as well. As his easy living life gets disturbed by the dog growing and growing, it has an effect on mr. Hublot and this is visible by his design: the meters on his head go on and on until they reach a maximum. I think this was very cleverly done in the design department, how to make clear through their design how a character is feeling. All the meters and other appliances that are part of his attire react on his surroundings and his behaviour and are sort of a translation of his feelings.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi70hobDjmdHSaaZERWu3PZ6lpm-ynFDBw5rT3ZI5SVMUtF_AaTJQAz_7aZOlxLyy-ZQSvik1U-1jcG13MhTeio9U_futsJZO_jh5zPznAj0-AmWcswVB2-3rSXuxdGdyKDk5uqKftax2g/s1600/Screen+Shot+2014-03-06+at+17.17.09.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi70hobDjmdHSaaZERWu3PZ6lpm-ynFDBw5rT3ZI5SVMUtF_AaTJQAz_7aZOlxLyy-ZQSvik1U-1jcG13MhTeio9U_futsJZO_jh5zPznAj0-AmWcswVB2-3rSXuxdGdyKDk5uqKftax2g/s1600/Screen+Shot+2014-03-06+at+17.17.09.png" height="281" width="320" /></a><br />
<br />
I really loved how the animators played with the design here, on how it's more than just a part of someones attire, but an extension of their personality. Even for the dog, to visualise him as a stray dog they used scrap metal in his design. Clever details like these make such a short film very interesting. I also think there's room for such details because it's such a short film.<br />

Since the second camera angle was a bit awkward I decided to try and play around with the other angles how to extend them or alter them. It was awkward because of the fact that she is directed in the other way. While in the other camera angles she is slightly directed towards the camera, but looking slightly beside the camera, it was really weird to look at her from the side. It felt misplaced and it lost the focus.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I tried a few different approaches of the same scene. At first I extended the first camera angle up to the third angle, leaving the second one out completely. I felt the walking off to the dresser took too long, so decided to add the second angle in again. That already felt more natural but I wasn't too sure about the cut to the third angle. I shortened the second camera slightly so it would cut a tad bit sooner. After that it was deciding wether either of the two was better to choose to render. I finally decided I liked the third test the best. Even though in both the second and the third test they cut while the arm is in motion, I felt like that it jumped to what seemed less like a movement than in the third test. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After deciding which one to choose I hogged four computers again and set them to render parts of the first camera angle (geometry and hair layers) and a new part of the second angle. I wonder how long it'll take this time.</div>

<br />Daniquehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13717146853700487664noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4474944506551070088.post-6279123126695950892015-01-16T13:59:00.000+00:002015-01-16T13:59:00.232+00:00Final CritToday we had to show our finished films (or as good as finished in case you were behind.)<br />
<br />
For feedback I got a few good points to improve now and to think about next time to prevent them from happening.<br />
<br />
In general the audio is on a quite low volume. I think this is mainly because of my low volume of voice when I recorded it (I didn't really want to look like a fool in front of my flatmates when I'm screaming to myself.) To tackle this the next time is to record with a proper device in a proper place (record studio). How to fix it right now is to try and up the volume as much as possible without getting creaking sounds in the audio. I tried this, it's not a lot more louder, but it's at least a bit more so that's great. I also put the volume for the sound effects up a bit since they were too subtle.<br />
<br />
Further more, there was some critique about the second camera-angle, which I quite honestly didn't want to give in to because I don't want to render it again, but then I decided to stop being such a stubborn ass and just listen. It happened many times before that I didn't want to listen in the first place, but when I did it anyway it turned out to be better than before. (listen to your teachers Danique, they're right most of the time. All the time?)<br />
So to look for what might look better is to playblast quickly a few camera angles to see what works better and then decide if I want to render it before handing it in next thursday or leave it like a playblast. But the perfectionist in me wants it rendered, so that's what I'll do.<br />
<br />
Other than that I got quite a good response to my animation, that it was well done considering I am still in an early stage. This was one of the first times I properly animated after script/storyboard instead of just a random walkcycle, so I'm quite happy with that.<br />
<br />
Next time: Danique, don't be such a tit and just listen to what's being said to you.Daniquehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13717146853700487664noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4474944506551070088.post-82393596671487359252015-01-15T23:51:00.002+00:002015-01-15T23:51:57.880+00:00Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs<strike><span style="font-size: xx-small;">I feel like everybody already talked about this, so I'll jump on the bandwagon as well.</span></strike><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I was never really attracted to Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs when it first came out. I thought it was silly and perhaps very childish. When I finally decided to watch it (after watching the trailer for the sequel and laughing hysterically at all the puns), I put it on the TV while my father and sister in law were present as well, she was excited since she hear lots of good reactions from it, my dad (even though he always enjoyed animation films) was a bit skeptical like me. In the end I really enjoyed the film, the concept turned out to be really cute, the designs were very funny, the animation was pretty amazing but overall the puns and funny inside jokes and sort of "blissful ignorance" was hysterical.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And I'm a sucker for puns.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The designs of the characters are based of simplified proportions of the human body. Seeing the sketches they've made, they remind me of illustrations of you would see in books for children (while the story is based off, in fact, a book, the illustrations are totally different than the outcome of the movie). The style of sketches resemble those flatpanel kind of illustrations without lines on the edges, but because of the flat use of colours and little dimension added to them, they're still more 2D illustrations than 3D. I think this was a right choice to make the designs in such a way, since it translates really well to 3D character models.</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Because of the style being so derived from the original anatomy, a lof of movements are possible that would've been unthinkable in a more realistic approach of animation, which really adds to the movie. The animation is perfectly aligned with the designs, being quirky, funny and very exaggerated. For example: instead of "neatly" trying to animate the hands typing on a keyboard, the arms just flail around. This gives the impression of typing on the keyboard, but adds a whole lot of humour to the scene.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As said before, I love puns, and the producers really hit the nail on the head with the designs of the foodimals (food-animals). They're fusions of animals and food which share similarities in either shape, name or both. The shrimpanzees for example is based off the likeliness in the name: chimp/shrimp, while the hippotatomus have a common sound, but also look and form. While watching the film and every time a new foodimal was introduced, they had me laughing like crazy because of its cleverness and funny designs. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The designs of the foodimals are simplified, but still very recognisable as animals, which is cleverly done by the designers. All the foodimals are all really kind-natured and look like stuffed plushies to me, so I find it hilarious that they think at first that they're evil, while they're all just another species trying to survive.</div>

Like usual, rendering was a bit of hell for me, I always get so much more stressed out and frustrated when rendering. It starts slow, and then it gets even slower and I just lose a tiny bit of hope every time. At first I rendered the geometry layer. This way I would have a film to show even if the hair word render catastrophically. It took 1.5 days but all the frames were finally rendered. When I wanted to check on the frames that night, I already met two problems.</div>

Firstly was this: this is the beginning of the second camera angle. I rendered the first 50 frames on the first day after finishing the first camera angle because I had to wait anyway, so I thought I'd already render another batch. When starting rendering the following morning I probably made a mistake by scrolling whilst in the second camera angle, causing the view to be more zoomed out. This meant I had to re-render the first batch, since the hair layer (if this would be rendered correctly) would fit on the second part.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The second problem I encountered is that the alarm clock suddenly disappeared. There are two alarm clocks in the scene, one before and while it gets picked up and the moment it gets put down, the first one goes invisible and the second one appears. I did this because I had a bit of an issue with the constraints and after putting it down, the alarm wouldn't stay in its place. When I made a playblast before I started rendering, it was still there, so something must've gone wrong right before I started rendering, because in the file of the scene I created especially for rendering the alarm disappears, but it's still there in the former file. </div>

I tackled the alarm clock issue by rendering a single frame of camera angle 3, 4 and 5 so I could composite the alarm into the scene. With a pen tool-mask I singled out the alarm in the frame so it could be placed on top of the image sequence. Since the girl is in front of the alarm sometime I had to either alter the frame with the alarm or alter the sequence. I decided to duplicate the image sequences and place them on top of the alarmfiles. Using the roto-brush tool I singled out the pieces of her that cover the alarm and by layering those sequences on top of the alarm it was fixed again.<br />
<br />
How to prevent the first problem is to better check the cameras before I start rendering, I'm lucky this time it was only 50-something frames that needed to be re-rendered, so it wasn't that much extra work and effort.<br />
Since I'm not sure how it's possible that the alarm disappeared since it's still on "visible" in the scene itself, but I couldn't find it anywhere in the scene, I'm not really sure how to fix this problem. In the first place it's better to check the scene thoroughly before rendering to see if everything is still in its right place, and if something is off, it's better to check and fix it before hand than having to put extra effort in post-production.Daniquehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13717146853700487664noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4474944506551070088.post-22477963466638965422015-01-14T13:17:00.000+00:002015-01-14T13:17:30.369+00:00Rebekah Caputo<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">Rebekah Caputo is a puppeteer and theatre maker.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<b><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">What is puppetry?</span></b><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">For anything inanimate to appear alive. (This can be literally puppets, but nature and other resources are used as well)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">Why puppets? Because they find them magical. There’s a feeling deep inside all of us that wants objects, puppets and things to be or appear alive. This feeling has roots deep inside since many, many years ago.</span><span style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">As a puppeteer you can be anything, no restriction by your own human form. You can do anything. You can fly, move all around, be tall, be small.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">Rebekah started off with an acting degree, but the study turned out to be more about theatre making (creating original performances). After graduating she set up with a theatre company. There she encountered extreme physical characterisation with their own bodies, participated in (contemporary) dance, clowning, characterisation and puppetry. This was the moment she started playing around with puppets and found a fascination. She then found another studio that turned it all upside down. Being able to create a world on stage and able to control everything.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">After a short while the company split (it was a young company, still unsure of what to do) and she decided to create puppets on her own for two years, learning how to make good puppets and performing in small settings with small audiences, to learn how to do puppetry in front of an audience. This was a big learning experience.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">She mainly created tiny puppets which are about 40 cm tall. She had created Lois as well, Lois was full body puppet. The puppet was taller than she is, her hand in the puppets head had to be raised at all times. All puppets are a bit dark and “strange”, influences by these studios:</span><br />

She taught us how to bring all your energy and focus to your fingertips, so when you lightly touch the object (in this case a crumpled page of the news paper), you get to see and understand how it moves. After interacting with it while it has no character, you had to look at the page and see how you could turn it into a character like thing, make it seem like he's looking somewhere, decide how he moves etc. I didn't participate for I wanted to watch and record it, but it was very interesting and it's real good reference for a later point in time when I ever get stuck with my work.</span><br />

"The uncanny is a Freudian concept of an instance where something can be both familiar yet alien at the same time, resulting in a feeling of its being uncomfortably strange."* Put it simple: something is created to resemble something human, it looks like something human, but there's something off and you can't put your finger on it where exactly it feels wrong. This creates a paradoxical nature where you are simultaneously attracted and repulsed by the thing you're looking at.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The uncanny valley, in animation or in real life, is achieved when they wanted to create something that looks as human as possible, but in fact it looks horribly eery. In real life this is usually achieved with new robots. Robots used to look as inhumane as possible, like machines, up to one point where they decided to create humanoids: robots that have proportions similar to a human body. These robots were created for research of prosthetics, companionship and personal assistance. Even more humanlike robots were then created who have a "skin" that resembles the human skin and face. While they might be produced for the same functions of companionship or assistance, I feel I would rather get help from a more robot looking creature than a human looking creature that isn't quite there yet.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
How does animation fit in the uncanny valley?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
One of the first names that comes to mind when asking people about animation films where they thought the characters looked eerily weird is the Polar Express. The film experimented with characters that looked as human as possible and the movements recorded through very detailed motion capture suits to create as movements in the film that were as human as possible. While the film has pretty stunning visuals (when it doesn't concern the characters), a lot of critics were horrified by the dead-looking, mannequin-like characters which kind of resembled zombies. I must honestly say I agree. The faces are stiff, the eyes look dead, which is a shame since the bodily movements are gorgeous. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Another film that gives me a bit of creeps is the Adventures of Tintin. I've never fully seen the feature, but I've watched the intro and some trailers and I'm a bit freaked out. In the beginning I was awestruck with how human it looked, that I couldn't even tell it was animated, but it was all too perfect that I started to dislike the looks. It feels like they used a human body with correct proportions and glued a head on top that is still too character looking to pull it off completely.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
To what point is motion capture creepy and when is it good? It is known that motion capture is used in many films and instances, like Gollum and Davy Jones in films, but also in games like Assassin's Creed and Watchdogs. Both Gollum and Davy Jones are inhumane characters with humanlike roots, but are so far distorted from the look which we view as "human", it doesn't look weird and repulsive to us, so why does the combination of human-looking characters in gameplay and motion capture work at least more than it does in before mentioned feature films? I'm note quite sure.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Other instances of 3D animated characters which give me real bad vibes are the "Cubo girl" and Sweety (used to catch online predators.) Cubo girl is a webbrowser that lets the visitor of the webpage interact with this image of a girl. When moving the cursor, the girl follows it with her eyes while slightly turning her head. Because of the way her mouth is shaped, the colour of her eyes and the distortion to the sides of her face as she moves it around, it feels really weird looking at it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Sweety is a computer generated young girl (created by Dutch people, get yo pride on!), used to catch online predators. They would create animations with commands for the girl which could be used as replies to the men in the chatroom with her. The combination of the human like complexion, the webcam placed at an angle where her face isn't completely visible and the quality of the webcam, it doesn't look like something is off. In fact, it looks awfully lot like a young girl sitting there. However, when I first saw the promotional video, I initially thought I was looking at footage of a real girl, but then it struck me and something was off. That was also the moment in the video in where she reveals she isn't real. I must say it's a gorgeous piece of animation, and there is so much effort put in all the detail, but honestly: there's something about her that puts me off a bit and I can't say why. </div>

Brave is one of my favourite animated features from the past few years. Brave, released in 2012, is set in the Scottish highlands and tells the story of princess Merida who brings chaos in the kingdom by defying an age-old custom concerning princes asking for her hand. She stumbles upon a witch who provides her with a spell with a different outcome than she had anticipated. She accidentally transforms her mother into a bear and has little time to turn her back before it's too late.<br />
<br />
I always really loved Pixar's approach on character design, since unlike Disney, Pixar tends to push a bit more over the "set boundaries" of how the lead characters should look like. Sure, in Tangled there are heaps of characters that don't fit the average mould, but these are all extras and background characters, while Pixar on the other hand still has a huge diversity when it concerns its main characters. (This difference is especially visible to me in the Incredibles. Perhaps I'll talk another time about that) I also think that in Brave besides the great main characters (Merida and the mother as a bear) the rest of the "main cast" is the rest of her family and the other clan leaders and their sons.<br />
<br />

<br />
Merida is one of the most gorgeous girls I've seen in an animated feature and I think that has to do with her down to earth design. Merida's bodily features are really "human" to me, wide hips, average waist, short stature, not too skinny arms (and I'm not sure if the legs are visible that much?). Top it all off with the explosion of a hairdo and it feels really close to the audience, unlike the too perfectness that you often see on screen. While I must admit that like in other features, the main women are made really gorgeous and men seem to get more diversity or extremities in their design, Brave tends to follow this trend as well.<br />
Elinor has a similar "more humanlike" body type like Merida, but a face with more realistic features and proportions. I think this was done to first: make her look older (which she of course is), but also to make her look a bit more stern and serious, while Merida's round face with the bright blue round eyes and still tiny-ish nose reveals she is still young.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Fergus is a beast of a man with it's great stature and square body shape. He isn't simply overlooked and it's probably not easy to go past this man. In his great chest, broad shoulders and arms hides a very humorous and loveable father who enjoys storytelling and playing with his children more than actually really seriously ruling his kingdom. Unlike Elinor and Merida, Fergus has the look of the image we know of vikings and how they are displayed in modern culture and stories (great, monstrous men). </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The triplets are male copies of the child version of Merida that is shown in the movie: same round shape of face, size of the eyes and colours. Only real difference to me is the hair. Since the boys don't talk in the film, you'd think they would make some changes in the design to distinguish them from each other, but I feel the creators made them look exactly the same (Except for one curl of hair) for a purpose. Since the boys don't speak, they are no different characters of their own, but a whole. The triplets are basically one character and a visual display of mischief.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The witch is actually a really lovely lady, so I find it hilarious that she has a design similar to designs of "evil witches", displayed in other films. This makes it seem to me that well doing witches are in fact the same old ladies as the evil witches, there is no concrete difference needed in the design to make witch look "good". (Because basically, if the witch is gorgeous, there's something wrong with her doing, i.e. Mother Gothel and the stepmother of Snow White) Back to the woodcarver witch. She is just a tiny old lady, hunched forward with bony fingers and arms and I find it all really intriguing since she has such a lively performance in the film.</div>

The clan lords Macintosh, Dingwall and MacGuffin are representations of other stereotypes concerning Scottish people and northern "viking" folk. You have the big bearlike stature (like Fergus, but a bit more toned down), the really tiny loud old men and the "Braveheart" look alike being all "gorgeous and handsome". Their sons are physical "copies" of their fathers in a younger body, while their personalities are completely in contrast with their father beliefs, and the way this is portrayed in their poses reveals how tiny details in designing not only the physical appearance but as well in personality design, can change how a character looks in a film.</div>
